Arc: Correcting the Public Lie

Premise and conflict

A records apprentice can challenge the public blame attached to her father, but disclosure will expose the custodian who helps her. The thematic question is whether correction can avoid harming a compromised witness.

Participants and constraints

Mara wants vindication; Iven wants safety and institutional survival. Use direction, access constraints and knowledge/revelation rules. Historical truth remains in the flood record.

Causal spine

This is a representative sequence. The game may discover the accounts in a different order under its guards; the shared motivations and historical causality remain the same.

  1. Mara encounters the notice and requests the original evidence: the accusation produces her investigative goal.
  2. Iven's evasions increase suspicion. The archive's visible water mark connects bureaucratic testimony to experienced damage, but does not prove intent.
  3. Mara secures signed inspection by explaining that she needs a record, not an invented confession. Iven authorizes it despite risk.
  4. Comparison with the ledger reveals the written order. A separate request for a certified copy makes the cost to Iven explicit.
  5. Mara must choose how to use the copy. Her change is from demanding a simple culprit to accepting a costly, limited correction.

The novel selects one ending; the game offers two local disclosure outcomes. Shared history does not branch. Council motives remain unknown. No outcome repairs the flood's losses.
